#624 – Mather Lane Mill No.3 (Brooklands Mill) Leigh

On the south side of the Bridgewater Canal is the other remaining mill of the Mather Lane complex, Mill No.3 which is also known as Brooklands Mill. Unlike No.2 mill, this is still in industrial / commercial use but split into multiple units as is normally the case with old mills.

The adjacent mill (No.1 maybe?) is long gone, and the site is now housed over with properties that look to date from the 1990’s which could be when the mill was demolished.

I found the following photographs on Britain From Above, and noticed that the mill originally had a dome on top of the tower. This has since been removed, maybe for maintenance reasons (sometimes they were slate) or for financial (sometimes they were copper so worth a few quid). The footbridge over the canal linking the mills on one side to the other, still exists. Well sort of, the parapets and bridge beams over the canal are still there, but there are no steps up to it and the roof has gone. However, it’s still there and the words ‘Brooklands’ can just be made out in very faded paint, the rest of the wording after it has faded away and is illegible (see my photograph below the aerial photos).

Brooklands Mill is on the right of the frame here, the mill to it’s left at the bottom of the picture has gone. No. 2 Mill on the far left of the frame is still there, but all the other mills in this scene have gone.

Same scene but from further away. Butts Mill chimney can be seen at the far left of the frame. Other than Butts Mill and Mather Lane 2 and 3, all the other mills in this scene have been demolished.
