#623 – Mather Lane Mill No.1, Leigh

Just up the Bridgewater canal from Butts Mill are Mather Lane Mills, a small complex of mills that straddled both sides of the canal. Wikipedia tells me that it was built in 1882 and the Bolton architects of Bradshaw, Gass and Hope were responsible for the design, as they were of many Lancashire mills. In comparison to some later mills, e.g. Butts Mill, it is quite compact, and is square in plan but at six storeys, at the taller end of the spectrum.

The mill was converted to apartments in 2019 / 2020 and an additional ‘penthouse’ floor added to the top, although the surrounding vista’s aren’t exactly Manhattan-esque, but still, it’s nice to see renovation and re-use rather than demolition. The fact that it’s Grade II listed may have something to do with that though.

I’ve no idea who Jeffery Damer is, or for that matter why he rocks, although it could be a misspelling of 1980’s American serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer. Either way, I wanted to include it in the frame because why not?

    Hi
    Just looking at your article.
Dramatic pictures as always, but surely the sloping sides are an optical illusion (though I can’t see how)?

Yes the sides are definitely vertical! The section of building nearest to the camera is at an angle to the rest of it as its exterior wall runs parallel to the canal, which makes it look slightly odd.

Actually it gives it a really dramatic and dynamic feel, although you would have managed that in any event as you usually do!
