#541 – Review of the decade – 2010

The start of a new decade brings with it a certain degree of reflection, mainly along the lines of ‘f**k me where have the last eleven years gone’. Over the Christmas period I noticed that the papers and other media are full of reviews of the decade, so, slave to convention that I am, I thought I’d have a look back over the last eleven years at the places I’ve photographed to see what’s happened to them.

The decade started with my wife 2 months pregnant, so I knew that after August 2010 I’d have less time on my hands to explore and photograph. Consequently I saw as many places as I could in the time I had available!

Corus Redcar – January 2010

I took these just before the plant was mothballed by the then owners. It was then take over by the Thai owned SSSI who reopened the plant to much publicity and ran if for a couple of years before they realised that they couldn’t get it to make money either. That’s being harsh – the Chinese dumping cheap steel onto the market was the probably the main factor. The works closed for the final time and is now being decommissioned. More recent pictures to come in a few weeks time.

Horwich Loco Works – May 2010

The works have pretty much been demolished now. A couple of buildings will be left standing, but the mighty erecting shop is no more. I’ll post a picture I took in December 2019 soon.

ROF Wrexham – July 2010

From what I can see from Google Earth (I’ve not been back since), precious little has changed here, although I imagine many of the remaining buildings will be even more inaccessible than before due to the onslaught of the brambles and other undergrowth.

Brymbo Steelworks – July 2010

The roof of the old foundry collapsed in 2015, but other than that the small band of volunteers are soldiering on to preserve the memory and the remaining buildings on site here.

Leyland Motors Test Track – July 2010

Not much has changed physically, but planning permission has finally been granted for housing to be built on the site.

Xelflex – September 2010 

Gone. The mill was demolished a couple of years after this and housing has been built on part of the site, but the rest is still vacant.

The Duke of Lancaster, December 2010

Ah, the Duke of Lancaster, some of my favourite photographs (one of the few that I’ve taken that hangs on my own walls) and one that always, without fail, lead to questions and comments whenever I show it at a talk or an exhibition. Not much has changed to the Duke, well, apart from the fact she (he?) is now painted mostly black.

    Interesting review – just curious – why is the Duke of Lancaster being painted black? the cost of paint these days and the surface area to be covered would make this unaffordable to most people and on a vessel goiung to scrap(??) it makes little sense….Keith

      Who knows! The owners of the ship move in mysterious ways as it was previously covered in large scale graffiti art. Not sure about it going for scrap, not yet anyway, although the local authorities would love to see that happen.

        Yes, it would be good if it could be saved and taken back to sea. Being cynical, I think she’s only managed to survive this long as the price of scrap steel to China has fallen through the floor

        Yes, I got some photos of it with the graffiti on it. It was…….different. I preferred it in the rusty white that I originally captured it in, to the graffiti and the black.
