#655 – Brierfield Gas Holder 1

I last went here in 2015 when I was accompanying my friend Katriina around a few places in Lancashire and we had a quick look here. It was around this time that the National Grid were accelerating their removal of gas holders and I regret not photographing more.

I had it in my head that this one was listed, but I can find no evidence of this. Interestingly when I visited Brierfield Mill around the same time, I was told that the gas holder was part of the master plan and would be retained as some kind of amphitheater. But nothing has since happened, other than the remaining buildings have been demolished and the site is up for sale. And I also found this online article which suggests that the structure is going to be demolished.

So the time seemed right for another, possibly final, visit.

This is possibly the best one of the day, marred by the fact that I forgot to change the aperture from F4 and didn’t get the depth of field I wanted. Compositionally I’m very pleased with it though.

This was taken by threading my hands and iPhone through the bars of the gate using the super wide angle lens on my iPhone and I still struggled to get the whole thing in the frame. Trying to find a spot where I could get it centred was harder than you might think as I ended up getting too much of the trees to the left in the frame.

A short walk down the canal behind the adjacent mill gave a view over the north light windows of one of the sheds. The water of the canal wasn’t completely still but did give a half decent reflection.

  1. Great photos as always. Sad to hear that it will go (eyesore???, how differently people think…) It’s a beautiful gasholder. Thanks for linking that article. I just checked my pictures from that trip back in 2015. I didn’t remember that I had colour film in my camera…

Thanks Katriina! I’m still a bit unsure as to its future as they’ve demolished the small buildings around it and removed the internala parts of the gas holder so it is literally just a frame. Maybe this will be preserved, I really don’t know.
