Shadows of the North 2026 now on sale!

I am pleased to announce that my new book Shadows of the North is now on sale!

This is the third edition of Shadows of the North, and rather than just do another revision I’ve started from scratch this time with a larger A4 format, more photos of which over 40 have been taken since the last edition of the book.

So what’s it about? It’s a canter round the old mill towns of northern England, towns where I’ve lived pretty much my whole life and watched the industrial and urban landscape evolve into something unfamiliar. The mills are less and less a feature of this landscape, and while mill closures and demolitions have been ongoing since the 1960’s, it’s more and more noticeable now how few mills and chimneys are visible on the skylines of the mill towns.

But while the book takes in the derelict and the demolition, there is also an occasional glimpse of a rare survivor – whisps of steam (not smoke these days) drifting from a bleachworks chimney or a woollen mill still producing fine yarn after over a hundred years. The textile mills aren’t dead yet, there is still a little life left in them.
