Rome Street Gas Holder, Carlisle 2

For this, I chose to take a more objective Becher-esque perspective, getting far enough away to keep the verticals correct, and exposing / post-processing to give a featureless sky. I’m thinking that my next typology project will be various industrial forms – there aren’t enough gas holders left to do one just on them, or at least not in the north, and besides Richard Chivers has already done that (I can recommend his fold out publication if it’s still available).

This photograph is inspired by this photo (below) I took of the gas holder in Brierfield a couple of years ago. Although I prefer the foreground in that one, it was a bugger to compose due to various reasons (distance, lens, angle of light, slope of the road, etc). However, despite this being a better photograph from a technical perspective, I find it visually less satisfying for some reason.

    Hi Andy,

All 3 are great shots but I do like no.2. It is less cluttered than 3 ie the tree to the left in 3 seems to unbalance the shot and the structure is upright in 2 but slightly leaning back in 3, I do appreciate there is a difference in heights between the 2.

I think you’ve made some great images from a difficult location

Thank you Clive. Brierfield was an awkward one as I wanted to include the puddle which in itself was tricky. To do so involved standing in the entrance of a mill yard, which was on a slope so getting further away would have resulted in more converging verticals. Not a problem though as it was easily photographed from the other side.
